When you’re investing into a new pair of running shoes, there’s a few areas you need to pay attention to. These include:

Are flat shoes good for running?
There’s been quite a debate over flat shoes and whether or not they are safe for runners. A study tracking 927 runners found that those wearing flat shoes are at no greater of a risk for injury than whom who didn’t.
So, are they good for running? The short answer, yes. Let me explain.
When you think about our history as humans, we were walking around barefoot for most of our evolution. Even over time, moccasins, slippers, and other shoes with no insoles were commonly worn. The modern running shoe wasn’t invented until the 70’s.
Nowadays, running shoes with little to no sole are called “runners flats”. You’ll see many athletes and seasoned runners sporting them. The idea is that you are reducing the distance from the ground to your feet, improving performance.
They typically are characterized by a narrow fit, firm midsole, lightweight construction, and a low heel-to-toe ratio. Now, if you aren’t used to this style of shoe, you may experience some issues at first. Sore calves and heels are common. Over time, your body will adapt and you can benefit from flat shoes.
Common mistakes when buying running shoes
While style is important, don’t make it a priority when picking up a new pair of running shoes. If you focus too much on looks, you may end up with a pair that ins’t as comfortable of performance enhancing as another. Try to find a pair that falls into the middle, which looks good and feels even better. This brings me to the next common mistake.
Don’t wear shoes that are too tight. It’s common to mistake tightness for a snug fit. It shouldn’t feel like your feet are about to explode. There should be a bit of extra width and length so you feet can move around a tiny bit.
Consider the weather you enjoy running in, or at least, the weather you find yourself running in the most. Is it rainy and wet? Then make sure you get shoes that have a drying system and preferably aren’t composed of mesh. Extra grip and traction would also be important. The point is, think ahead so you don’t end up with a pair that isn’t optimal for your training style.
Proper running form
Some think that running is simple. You just run. But, that really isn’t the case. Like any other exercise, proper form is key to preventing injury and better performance.
Here are some tips to remember when you go for a run to polish your form:
- Keep your chest up and shoulders back.
- Look straight ahead and keep your head up.
- Push your butt forward to engage more of your hips and to prevent slouching.
- Maintain a consistent pace. Unless you’re doing HIIT or a similar training style, you want to keep a certain speed all throughout your run mostly.
- Keep your knees inline with your feet.
- Push off the ground with your feet.
- Don’t squeeze your hands, you want more blood flow to be going to your lower body, not upper.
- Focus on maintaining a consistent breath.
Benefits of running
You know what makes me love running even more? Understanding the health benefits. It gets me hyped up knowing how much good I’m doing for my body and brain every time I step out of the house.
And yes, I said the brain. When you run, blood vessels and nerve cells get stimulated to grow. The hippocampus region, responsible for learning and memory, also is known to expand. A study published by the National Academy of Sciences concluded this very fact. The midbrain, which controls hearing and vision, increases in volume as well.
It’s no secret either that when you exercise, you feel good. This is because there is a release of endorphins, testosterone, growth hormone, and other chemicals.
Perhaps most importantly, running improves your cardiovascular health. This is linked to a longer life and better overall quality of life.
