Maison Margiela is a French luxury brand headquartered out of Paris that was launched in 1988 by Martin Margiela. They produce everything from menswear to womens apparel and fragrances but one area they impressed us in is their footwear. Unarguably their most popular sneaker is the Margiela Future that comes in both a high top and low top version. We’re going to get into a review of them in a moment but first lets touch on the brands history.
Margiela Brand History
Martin attended the Royal Academy of Antwerp where he studied fashion and graduated in 1979. During the 80’s him and other designers were inspired by Japanese avantgardists such as Rei Kawakubo(Comme des Garçons founder). While he was a freelance designer in Milan, Italy, Martin would take this modern and de-constructive style to apply on his own designs. This usually manifested in intentionally exposed seams or linings for example. A few years later in 1984, he moved to Paris to become Jean Paul Gaultier’s design assistant until 1987.
One year later he launched his self titled label called Maison Martin Margiela with fellow designer Jenny Meirens. They worked out of a single apartment and created their first store before opening a small studio in Antwerp. Vogue magazine went on to say that Martin’s style “provoked shock and intrigue”. Everything from the brands logo to collections were mysterious and new in the world of fashion, setting him far apart.
New York Magazine even described Martin’s earlier fashion shows as “perhaps more like art happenings”. That same year he debuted the womenswear collection and avoided the spotlight so more emphasis could be put on the clothing. It wasn’t until 1998 that Margiela debuted a menswear collection called “line 10”. During that time until 2003 he also was the creative director at Hermès. When the company went public in 2002, the OTB Group purchased a majority of the shares. It wasn’t until 2009 that Martin resigned to focus on other projects but the company still is growing wildy.
Alright, enough of the boring history, lets get into the shoes.
Margiela Future Review
Made from the highest quality cow leather and crafted in Italy, these sneakers feature a padded upper and oversized velcro strap. The laces are behind the front leather flaps which sits on top a tonal rubber outer sole. Soft leather lining makes these extremely comfortable to wear and easy to slip on.
In black they have more of a streamlined appearance that you will find matches tons of outfits. You will want to wear these with pants as shorts don’t tend to pair too well with them. Besides that you can wear your favourite streetwear fits and get a bit of an avant garde feeling added to it. If you want something that really pops you can go for red, blue, or any of the dozen bright colours and textures the Future’s come in.
If you like the aesthetics of the Future sneaker from Margiela but want something a bit easier to pull you might like the low top version. It has the concealed laces, embossed suede tongue patch, and same quality as the high top versions but in a smaller package. These are much more versatile too since they are lows meaning you can wear them with shorts, joggers, jeans or what ever you want.
