Have you been considering purchasing shoes from Mezlan but need a second opinion? Well you’re in luck because today we’ll be covering everything you need to know so you can make a final decision. If you’re going to drop a few hundred bucks or more on some shoes they better be really damn good so lets find out if they’re worth it.
Before we get into dissecting their shoes though, lets take a quick look at how the brand came about.
Its founder Antonio Sanchez grew up in the Almansa region of Spain and if you’re a connoisseur of wine, you probably know this area well. Because it’s so hot and dry, it makes a rather nice environment to grow grapes. Raising livestock and living off the land was the traditional way of life there but Antonio yearned to do something more. His original dream was to study physics but with the priority of supporting his family it could never happen.
As a teenager he began to work at the Mezlan shoe factory which belonged to some extended family. He learned very quickly and gradually built up his skills around shoe making. After 9 years of working at the factory while studying English and business, Antonio was ready to bring Mezlan to the rest of the world.
In January of 1985, he stepped foot into America to begin his 260 day shoe tour. Yes, a shoe tour. He would travel all over to premier his footwear to stores like Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and others. If that’s not inspiration for hustling, I don’t know what is. You could say it was meant to be as well because Antonio met the love of his life and future business partner Catherine there.
In 1998, Antonio went on to buy the Bacco Bucci Italian shoe company to transform it into his own. He added higher quality materials, improved fitting systems and new styles. You could say the Bacco Bucci line was more youthful and modern compared to the Mezlan designs that were matured in tradition. This created a wonderful contrast and variety for all of Antonio’s customers.
Fast forward 10 years and in 2008 Mezlan launched its official retail division and website. The first boutique was opened in Las Vegas, Nevaga at the Grand Canal Shoppes in the Venetian & Palazzo hotels. Nowadays they have stores in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, San Jose and Arlington.
Now that you know the history of the brand, lets get into the fun part and talk about their shoes.
Mezlan Shoes Review
There are many areas of a shoe to consider before buying them so lets touch upon some key ones:
- Material: You need a shoe that will stand the test of time and that begins with the leather that is used. You’ll be pleased to hear that Mezlan shoes are composed of calfskin unless you opt for an exotic leather pair. Calfskin is softer, ages better, and has more durability due to the collagen fibers being finer. The uppers, sole and lining on most of their shoes are all leather besides some of the “Athleisure” models.
- Comfort: If you are going to be wearing these shoes at work or for long periods, they need to feel good on your feet. Nothing is worse than a hard sole or footwear that pinches your toes. Mezlan shoes feature soles that are injected with memory foam so it feels like you’re walking on air. Since they also utilize high quality leather, it forms to your feet better over time for a perfect fit. Don’t worry about it nipping your ankle either because the lining is made out of comfortable leather.
- Style: Lets be honest, you want a shoe that looks sleek and improves your image like the rest of us. Mezlan has everything you need from chelsea boots to wingtip oxfords, loafers and more. They offer an assortment of colours and levels of formality that will suit your footwear needs.
- Price: You’ll be looking to spend around $300-400 to get your feet into a pair of Mezlan’s. You may think this is a lot and you should, it’s an investment that can last you 10 years or even 20 with proper care. Think about how many $50-100 shoes you’d buy in that time that were of lesser quality. You’d end up spending way more so investing into high quality shoes saves you money in the long haul.
Overall we definitely recommend you look into treating yourself to a nice pair of Mezlan dress shoes. They have a great balance between aesthetics, durability and comfort that makes a well rounded footwear. Like with any of your shoes, make sure you take care of them with regular cleaning routine and these bad boys will last you many years to come.
